The Grouch from GrouchlandApril 11th, 2012
I know I’m not the only person who struggles with grumpiness. But sometimes I feel like it. And by the way, I never knew I was such a grouch until I had little people watching me all day long. Okay, maybe I knew it. But I guess I thought it was my little secret before that.
SO, I’m here to tell you – if you wake up feeling like the grouch from grouchland some days, you are not alone. Even if you love God, and you love your family, and you consider yourself a generally pretty-nice-easy-going-mostly-pleasant-most-of-the-time type of person…I know how you feel when you just have “those days.”
You see, I have “those days” most days. Maybe it’s because I’m a woman. Maybe it’s because I’m not a morning person. Maybe it’s because I’m just sweet ole’ me. But for whatever reason, fighting to overcome my natural fatigue/grumpiness is part of my daily bread right now.
There are always excuses, and there are probably often legitimate reasons, but thankfully, there is also grace and God’s Mercy. His Divine Mercy. I know that Jesus loves me even when I don’t feel those warm fuzzies in my walk with God. And guess what? He loves You, too – no matter how you are feeling.
That’s it. Nothing complicated. Just know there is a real God right there with you, keeping you steady, and more than ready to give you grace through the sacraments. Even if you don’t feel it.
So don’t give up. Don’t give up on yourself, and don’t give up on God. He will never give up on you, ya know. Don’t quit trying. Just keep coming to Jesus in Scripture, in the Eucharist, and in confession. He sees all your efforts – no matter how hidden, no matter how small. He knows that sometimes the effort to smile at someone when you’d rather slam the lid on your trashcan – is a very real effort. And He loves you for that. It’s a very real effort that might just be part of God’s plan to make you a better person, a person who gives and loves – even when it’s hard.
And don’t worry, Oscar. He’s never going to make you lug that trashcan around all by yourself. He’s with you every step of the way.Photo credit: E. Reis, Used with Permission
