Fairytales DO Come True!

August 20th, 2012by Emily Reis

I’d like to start this post with a little aside in praise of men.  You see, sometimes I am amazed at how many awesome, wonderfully manly men I am privileged to know.  I’m talking about real MEN OF GOD – men who fight everyday for the good God.  Men who fight to stay pure.  Men who are faithful to the teachings of Christ and His Church.  Men who strive for virtue and greatness in a culture that offers them comfort and self-appeasement.  Men who sacrifice for their families.  Men who find their strength in prayer and the sacraments.  Men who would die before being unfaithful to Christ.  Men who say yes with courage to God’s plan and call for their lives.  Men who are priests, and men who have a pursued a beauty to fight for in the sacrament of marriage.

So anyway, thank you Men.  Most especially and first of all- thank you to my husband, Patrick.  But thank you also to all the other virtuous guys who are out there being faithful to a call greater than yourselves.  This is a little shout out to you.

This is also a little shout out to the ladies who are dreaming of such a fella.  Guess what?  THEY EXIST!  I promise they do!  I’ve met more in the last decade of my life than I ever would have dreamed were actually out there.  I will say it again…there ARE still real men in the world, ladies!  But here’s the kicker:  Sometimes you have to fight a little harder to find them.

I will repeat a couple gems of advice given to me by saintly priests during my college years when I was dreaming of a real prince charming (later revealed as Patrick).  The first went something like this:  Run after God as hard as you can, as fast as you can, and never stop running.  When all you’re chasing is God, if you look over and see someone running next to you- then that’s going to be your spouse.

The second token of sagely wisdom is even more concise:  Hide your heart in the Heart of Christ, so that your spouse will have to look there to find it.

I followed those two principles faithfully, and lo and behold God’s plan for the man of my dreams was even beyond my wildest dreams.  Of course there’s always the possibility that when you run after God as hard as you can and hide your heart in Christ’s heart, you might find a different invitation for your life – perhaps a vocation to the religious life or even the consecrated single state.  But my point is this:  if you follow these 2 points and God is calling you to marriage…you will never have to settle for a so-so type of man.  You never have to settle for less than God’s best for you when you are faithful to God and want His will and plan and love more than anything else.

Fairy tales do come true.  I cannot even count the number of happy, faithful, fruitful marriages I am privileged to know of – real life fairy tales that only exist because God is at the center of them.  Marriages that kind of make my jaw drop because they are so beautiful.  Does it mean these marriages are easy?  No, of course not.  But they are flowing and coursing with a grace that no imitation can compare to.  And because God is the author of every true romance, when you let Him write the story of your life, He will fulfill the desires of your heart.
