The carpet in the sanctuary bears the coat of arms of Archbishop Karl J. Altar, who called for the renovation and expansion of the old cathedral shortly after his installation in 1950. Every bishop has a personal coat of arms that is his identifying mark. The coat of arms is woven into the carpet which was crafted in Holland.
