The sanctuary of the Cathedral, a space added in the 1957 renovation, is built around the altar, a simple mensa (table) resting on Bleu Belge marble pillars. The central panel in its base is a bronze sculpture of the Lamb of God done by Ernest Bruce Haswell. The steps leading to the altar are Verte Issorie marble and gold mosaic. On the south side (to the left as you face the altar) is the cathedra, the archbishop's chair. Each archbishop has a coat of arms which is mounted above the cathedra when he is installed. Opposite the cathedra is the prelatura, a seat which is used by the auxiliary bishop or a visiting bishop. Choir stalls ring the sanctuary. All the woodwork is carved mahogany accented with Italian bronze. |
