Archdiocese of Cincinnati and its parish communities.

Action Alert

State Budget Bill

HB 1, the state budget bill, has passed the Ohio House and Senate and is now in Conference
Committee. Currently the budget is projected to be $3 B short. Difficult decisions need to be
made before July 1, 2009.
The Catholic Conference of Ohio is concerned with many legislative issues: the defense of all
human life, from conception through natural death; care for the poor and vulnerable; and the
promotion of the common good. The Catholic Church also provides direct care and education for Ohio's citizens through numerous schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and social service
agencies.
The Catholic Conference of Ohio is asking legislators to prioritize the needs of the poor and
most vulnerable. We are also encouraging careful consideration of budget issues that impact
charitable institutions and chartered nonpublic schools.
1. Support basic human needs
Maintain adequate funding for hunger, housing, and protective services programs.
2. Support fair, affordable, and accessible health care
Maintain proposed plans that help hospitals and charitable nursing homes, and simplifies
           Medicaid eligibility.
3. Support fair treatment of chartered nonpublic school students and teachers
Maintain funding to the Administrative Cost Reimbursement, Auxiliary Services, EdChoice and
           Cleveland Scholarship programs.
4. Support elder care
Maintain support for a Unified Budget for Long-Term Care, the PASSPORT, Assisted Living and
the National Senior Services Corp program.
5. Support Life, abstinence education and cord blood research
Promote adult stem cell and blood cord funding; reapply for abstinence-based programs.
6. Oppose casino gambling and slot machines
