NEWLY-MARRIED

Two of the most troubling aspects of American society today are the high rate of divorce and the fact that divorce in one generation increases the likelihood of divorce in the next.  Current divorce statistics indicate that most divorces occur in couples married less than 5 years and that the proportion of divorces is highest for couples married three (3) years.” (Time, Sex and Money: The First Five Years of Marriage, Creighton University) – (http://www.creighton.edu/MarriageandFamily)

In reality, “becoming married” is a process that takes months or (more often) years.  Oneness or unity is the goal, but the central paradox of marriage is that healthy togetherness requires healthy separateness.  One two selves can find true intimacy.  Couples are in effect promising to “grow up together,” to agree and disagree with this person for the rest of their lives.

Because of the above findings, it’s highly recommended that couples be supported during this time.  Some of the options available:

·        Millennium Marriages – various parish initiatives around the diocese offering programs of enrichment and support usually occurring in a small-group setting.  These can be led by “seasoned married couples” or peers. Call any location of the Family Life Office for further information.

o       To Seal and Strengthen Love – excellent resource for parishes considering initiating newly-married ministry. (www.nacflm.org)

 ·        Foundations – a bi-monthly newsletter for newly-married couples specifically aimed at teaching skills and providing support throughout the first years of marriage. www.foundationsnewsletter.com

·        Marriage – a bi-monthly marriage magazine providing enrichment articles for marriages of all “ages.”  www.marriagemagazine.org
