Adult Faith Formation
Welcome to the section of our web site that focuses on adult faith formation. Our goal for these pages is to provide you with some quality approaches and resources to help you design and implement a comprehensive, parish based adult faith formation effort. We appreciate the challenge that shifting from a child-centered paradigm of faith formation to one that centers around adults entails.
The Office for Evangelization and Discipleship has named adult formation as one of our highest priorities. Below is our statement of commitment to partnering with you.
OED Dream Statement:
“The OED actively supports all those who lead adults in their search to become more faith filled disciples and full participants in the life of the Church. We believe that ongoing faith formation is an essential component of membership in the Church. Together with those who lead adults we continually look for ways to do faith formation more effectively and to involve adults in the whole process of catechesis.”
What the Church says…
“Most adults are capable of a free and informed response of faith to God’s initiative of love. They have a right and a duty to bring to maturity the seed of faith sown in them by God. They have experienced the joys and challenges of life and have the capacity to question the truth and meaning of life. The catechesis of adults…is the principal form of catechesis because it is addressed to persons who have the greatest responsibilities and the capacity to live the Christian message in its fully developed form.” (National Directory for Catechesis, p.187)
“Adult faith formation, by which people consciously grow in the life of Christ through experience, reflection, prayer and study, must be the central task in this catechetical enterprise…” (Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, #5.)
