Historic Planning Documents

Current Pastoral Region Planning in the archdiocese stands on the shoulders of several significant planning initiatives. For the Harvest 1986, a parish-based consultation project focused on two major emerging trends: the development of new forms of ministry and the declining number of priests. Parishes and parish clusters were invited to respond to the question, “What must we do to ensure high-quality parish ministry in the future?” Summaries of cooperative strategies were prepared and presented to an Archdiocesan Planning Committee and to each Dean. Ministry 2000 was a multi-phase process initiated by the Office of Planning and Research, and implemented within each deanery of the Archdiocese. Task Forces began to identify and assess each deanery’s resources and strengths, and to explore necessary and challenging priorities. In Archbishop Pilarczyk’s words, Ministry 2000 called for both an effective utilization of fewer priests and a revitalization of parish life. Finally, The Futures Project, 2005 listened to the “voices” of a variety of groups through parishioner surveys, convocations of priests and lay ministers, and focus groups. The outcome of the Futures Project included proposed strategic recommendations in four areas: Administration, Pastoral Priorities, Allocations, and Vocations. This document challenged all parishes to begin planning to prepare for the inevitable future when there would be one pastor for each of the one hundred regions. Deans were challenged to oversee the creation of “Pastoral Regions” within their deanery. Pastors were encouraged to consult with their Pastoral Councils and leaders to project a future for “vibrant ministries in each Pastoral Region.”

Each of these planning initiatives has contributed to preparing our local Church for our present lived reality. The documents are available here for your information and inspiration. As you read them you will understand their prophetic link to “A Vibrant Church: Fulfilling the mission of Jesus Christ in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.”
