Awareness Workshop on
Mental Illness
Presenters: Lissette Mira-Amaya & Deacon Tom Lambert Location: St. Francis of Assisi Church, Centerville OH When: Thursday, October 28, 2010
On Thursday, October 28 an Awareness Workshop on Mental Illness Support and Acceptance in Parish Communities will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Church 6245 Wilmington Pike Centerville OH 45459. The Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio and the Family Life Office are sponsoring this event. Deacon Tom Lambert from the Chicago Archdiocesan Commission on Mental Illness and Lissette Mira-Amaya a Therapist and Case Manager from Kalamazoo Michigan will be the major presenters.
Mental Illness is often misunderstood. The focus of this workshop is to provide awareness and understanding to remove the stigma that is often associated with mental illness. We hope to help parishes and parish staffs understand how to respond and support individuals with mental illness, as well as knowing where to find professional support and resources. The role of the parish and the faith response play an important role for persons with mental illnesses as well as the importance of the faith life of the individual.
The presentations will cover identifying and defining mental illnesses, the importance of the recovery process, a pastoral response to mental illness, the role of the parish and the value of a faith life in coping and recovery from mental illness. The impact on the family, family issues and resources that are available will also be included.
This will be the first time a workshop of this type has been offered for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. We encourage parish staffs, pastors, administrators, catechetical leaders, pastoral associates and ministers, principals, parish nurses, secretaries, and custodians to attend the workshop.
