Pennington says “we need to get in touch with that center of our being and let our prayer arise from there.”
I, Jesus. A Dialogue with the Savior. Concetta Belleggia, FSP. Pauline Books and Media, 1996.) Jesus speaks directly to the reader on “I am a real historical person,” “Your destiny is the Kingdom of God” and “I am the Life: Your Healer, Strength, and Peace” among other topics.
Who Do You Say I Am? Meeting the Historical Jesus in Prayer. William A. Barry, S.J. (Ave Maria Press, 1996.) Prayerful use of the historical facts of Jesus to enrich our prayer life and to know Jesus more deeply and personally.
Who We Are Is How We Pray. Matching Personality and Spirituality. Dr. Charles J. Keating. (Twenty-Third Publications, 1987.) This book explains the difference between personality and spirituality. Keating uses the Myers-Briggs personality types and which approaches to prayer will be more rewarding.
Prayer and Temperament. Different Prayer Forms for Different Personality Types. Chester P. Michael and Marie C. Norrisey. (The Open Door, Inc, 1984.) Another explanation of how knowledge of Myers-Briggs can enhance one’s prayer life.
Leading Students Into Prayer. Ideas and Suggestions from A to Z. (Twenty-Third Publications, 1993.) 26 prayers or prayer topics are discussed with tips for use in the classroom. Topics include Definition of prayer, Gimmicks as prayer starters, Jesus and Prayer, Observances, Silence and Stillness, Visuals to Prompt and aid prayer.
How Do I Talk to God? Prayers for the School year. Barbara Gargiulo. (Thomas More, 1999.) Very short prayers for special days grouped by seasons. Topics include Christmas and All Saints’ as well as First day of school and Taking a Test. Each prayer has a scripture quotation and one or two sentence introduction.
Imagination. Children and Prayer. Creative Techniques for Middle Grade Students. Pat Egan Dexter. (Twenty-Third Publications, 1993.) A guide to “picture prayer” with how to and examples.
Praying with Children. 28 Prayer Services for Various Occasions. Gwen Costello. (Twenty-Third Publications, 1990.) Prayer services for the special days in the year and for the normal days of children. Topics include: We are filled with the Spirit, We Care for the Earth; Come, Lord Jesus and Time to say “I’m sorry.”
Experiments in Prayer. Betsy Caprio. (Ave Maria Press, 1973.) An oldie but a goodie. Intro to using prayers in the classroom, and an overall good “how to” with 46 “experiments”—each experiment is a prayer or prayer service written in lesson plan format. Good for jr. high and high school.
Ways to Pray with Children. Prayers, Services, and Activites. Barbara Ann Bretherton. (Twenty-Third Publications,1995.) A “how to” resource for parents and educators aimed at primary aged children. Different prayer forms, rituals, and movements are given.
No Moment Too Small. Rhythms of Silence, Prayer and Holy Reading. Norvene Vest. (Cistercian Publications, 1994.) Based on Benedictine spirituality, this book encourages the reader to explore silence, Scriptures, and the Hours of prayer. Exercises for individuals or small groups follow each chapter.
Prayerways. Creative Spritual Exercises. Louis M. Savary and Patricia H. Berne. (Harper and Row, 1980.) Strategies to encourage the spiritual life; nontraditional forms of prayer such as journal keeping, letter writing, centering, drawing, dancing.
The Best of Holy Days and Holidays. Prayer Celebrations with Children. Gaynell Bordes Cronin. (St. Anthony Messenger Press, 1997.) Prayer services with background reflection, preparation, and short projects. Younger children through junior high.
Starting Points. Ideas for Reflecting and Praying Together. Sr. Judith Russi, SSMN. (Geoffrey Chapman, 1991, 81 pages.) Starting Points is the first book of really practical and well-tried reflection or prayer activities for school class assemblies or parish groups of all ages. Clear, practical suggestion for times of reflection or prayer, a starting point for busy teachers or group leaders, an assembly book with life-based, relevant ways to prepare young people “for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of adult life.”
Teach Me About Prayer. Discussions and Activities for Young Children. Paul S. Plum, Joan E. Plum and Catherine M. Odell. (Our Sunday Visitor, 2001.) Part of the “I am Special” series. Activities for young children aged 3-7 on the theme of Prayer: drawings, mazes, coloring pages, connect the dots, matching, and decorating.
Children, Imagination, and Prayer. Creative Techniques for Middle Grade Students. Pat Egan Dexter. (Twenty-Third Publications, 1993, 73 pages.) In this book for teachers and parents of middle-grade students, author Pat Dexter introduces a rich and creative means to prayer. Using techniques that combine imagination, relaxation, and guided imagery, she gives step-by-step directions for bringing students to a new and meditative experience of prayer, referred to by Dexter as “picture prayer.”
Prayer and Meditation for Middle School Kids. John B. Hesch. (Paulist Press, 1985, 130 pages.) Religious education teachers and youth ministers will appreciate the creative and inspiring prayer exercises presented here. They use music, visual aids, Scripture, and personal experiences of Middle School students.
In My Heart Room. 16 Love Prayers for Little Children. Mary Terese Donze, A.S.C. (Liguori Publications, 1982, 63 pages.) The author offers sixteen ready-to-suse prayers for children that center on everyday objects such as a pencil, a piece of bread, a flower, a penny. Using this simple prayer process, many children have been taught to “enter into their heart room” where they experience a prayerful closeness to Jesus living within them.
Playing and Praying with God. Guided Meditations for Children. Rita A. Brink, O.S.B. (Paulist Press, 1996. 107 pages.) 26 guided meditations offer a leader of prayer a means of exploring with younger children (ages 5 to 9) the realities of a life with God. While touching children in their own experience, these prayers also root them in their Catholic faith and scripture.
Prayer Themes and Guided Meditations for Children. Barbara Ann Brehterton. (Twenty-Third Publications, 1998, 82 pages.) The author offers sixteen imaginative and prayerful meditation experiences. Each has four basic steps: a relaxation activity, a guide to focusing on an object or objects related to the theme, a reflection upon the theme or object of prayer, and an invitation to prayer. After this last step, the children are eased back into the classroom or home situation.
Praying with Jesus. Prayer Services, Rituals for Children. Arthur E. Zannoni. (Benzinger, 2001, 80 pages.) This book is steeped in the prayer tradition of the Gospels and the Church. Each brief prayer service is meant to help classroom teachers and catechists, as well as children, embrace an aspect of the mystery and challenge of Jesus in prayer.
