APRIL 2009  Newsletter:

***************************************************

EbasedAcademy.org is currently live for the Spring Session 2009.  This session will close on April 24, 2009 at 4:30 pm.  You have from now until that time to complete your course work.  Course work does not carry into the next session.  This session we are offering 79 courses to professionals in the fields of prevention, treatment, social work, counseling, health education, and education.

The following is a list of our new courses!  Be sure to check them out!

- Substance Abuse Issues in the Deaf Community:  This one hour course will explore the Deaf population and the community's response to substance abuse treatment within this community.  Participants will understand terminology specific to the Deaf culture and explore barriers to substance abuse treatment for Deaf individuals.  Additionally, participants will understand why both assessment and treatment of substance abuse within the Deaf community is unique.

- School Emergency Management:  This one hour course is designed to provide information on School Crisis Management, a system designed to make schools safe and secure for our students. School Crisis Management begins with a thorough assessment of the building and grounds and then seeks to develop a thorough review of policies and procedures relative to crisis management.

- National Incident Command System for School Safety Teams:  While most emergency situations are handled locally, when there's a major incident help may be needed from other jurisdictions, the state and the federal government. NIMS was developed so emergency responders from different jurisdictions and disciplines can work together better to respond to natural disasters and emergencies, including acts of terrorism. NIMS benefits include a unified approach to incident management; standard command and management structures; and emphasis on preparedness, mutual aid and resource management.  This is a three hour course.

- SOQIC 1-7:  Solutions for Ohio’s Quality Improvement and Compliance (SOQIC) is a collaborative venture between the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH), the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS), mental health boards, providers and clients. The primary objective was to design, develop and implement at the state, county board and local provider levels a standardized consumer-centered, compliant and cost-effective mental health delivery system.   There are 7 SOQIC Courses.

- SYNAR: There are 5 SYNAR courses covering the Synar Amendment, the federal law restricting youth access to tobacco.  It is appropriate for all prevention and treatment professionals who want to learn about the laws, the reasons for the laws, and finally implementation strategies.  These courses are divided by general information and population groups.  The course topics within SYNAR include, a basic course overview, community coalitions, law enforcement, merchants and parents.

EBasedAcademy.org is coordinated by the Ohio Resource Network and funded by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services.
