Annual Archdiocesan Catholic Relief Services' Conference
Holding the Earth Lightly: A Call to Care for People and the Planet is the theme of the fourth annual Catholic Relief Services Conference Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at Kennedy Union at the University of Dayton. Cost for the conference is $30 ($10 for students)

Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk has endorsed the Catholic Climate Covenant, and the Archdiocesan Climate Change Task Force is helping parishes, schools and religious congregations to find ways to live out that covenant. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Catholic Social Action.

The Winds of Economic Change: Lessons from Katrina about Poverty and Justice
- What: The Winds of Economic Change: Lessons from Katrina about Poverty and Justice will be the focus of Sister Jamie Phelps’ presentation in the Fifth Annual Distinguished Speaker Series Tuesday, Nov. 10.
- Where: St. Charles Catholic Church, 4500 Ackerman Blvd., Kettering.
- Who: Sister Jamie, an Adrian Dominican sister, is the Director of the Institute of Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She personally experienced the tragedies of Hurricane Katrina.
- Why: “Those winds of change that we saw devastate the New Orleans area are not unlike the winds of change that many families face in the economy today with unemployment and home foreclosures,” said Nympha Clark, Director of the Mission Services Office. “Building on that image, Sister Jamie will share her passion for justice for the poor and vulnerable,” she said.

A Walk for Justice and Peace – Dayton
Walk in solidarity with people throughout the United States and around the globe in the 25th Annual Walk for Justice and Peace

Ohio Legislative Advocacy Day
Meet and dialogue with elected officials with the Catholic Conference of Ohio and the Ohio Council of Churches at the Legislative Advocacy Day and Legislative Reception
- When: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- Where: Afternoon gathering and commissioning at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, across from the statehouse, followed by selective issue meetings/lobbying at the StateHouse from 3:30- 5 p.m. Legislative reception from 5-6:30 p.m. at the StateHouse Atrium. Presentation by Legislators 5:30-6 p.m.
- What: Participants also will advocate for sufficiently funded health, human services and education related programs and help protect improverished and vulnerable persons.

The Catholic Climate Covenant: A Symposium on Climate Change and Catholic Social Teaching
Learn about the science of Climate Change and the Catholic Church’s response! This is an opportunity to learn more how to empower your parish community to promote better stewardship of God’s creation.
- When: Sunday, April 5, 2009, 2:00 to 6pm (From 6 to 7pm, an optional buffet dinner will be available, and participants are encouraged to stay for a lecture by Dr. David Orr from 7 to 8:30pm in the Cintas Center.)

Brother Ray Fitz to discuss regional issues and leadership at Weavers Leadership Retreat

- What: Brother Ray Fitz, S.M. will lead Weavers of Justice as member parishes and organizations plan together for another year of social action Bro. Fitz is the Fr. Ferree Professor of Social Justice at the University of Dayton and the Executive Director of the Association of Marianist Universities. He is a senior faculty member in the Center for Leadership in Community. As the Ferree Professor of Social Justice he works with faculty at the University of Dayton to integrate the Catholic social tradition across the curriculum. Bro. Ray was President of the University of Dayton from 1979 to 2002.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore has served since 2002 as Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. In 2007, he addressed the U.N. General Assembly on the topic of global climate change. Migliore has a master's degree in theology from the Center of Theological Studies in Fossano and a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University. His service to the Holy See's diplomatic corps includes work in Angola, Egypt, Warsaw, Strasbourg, and several Asian countries.
Jame Schaefer, respondent to Migliore's lecture, is associate professor of theology at Marquette University. Her work focuses on the constructive relationship between theology and the natural sciences with special attention to religious foundations for ecological ethics. Her articles in Cistercian Studies Quarterly, Theological Studies, and Worldviews: Religion, Culture, Science explore promising notions in the Christian tradition for addressing ecological degradation. She is preparing an anthology for Catholic University of America Press entitled Theocentric Foundations for Environmental Ethics: Promising Patristic and Medieval Sources.

Operation Rice Bowl Challenge Workshop in Dayton and Cincinnati
Participants will learn how to promote and implement Operation Rice Bowl (ORB) at your parish or school, and how to educate the entire parish community. National Catholic Relief Services representatives will lead the workshops. This year we have two $500 grants available to parishes and/or schools who develop creative strategies for implementing ORB. A River to Challenge, A Bridge to Build: A Discussion about Poverty and Racism featuring Alex Kotlowitz
Each year Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley (CSS) and Catholic Social Action co-sponsor a formation event and fundraiser for CSS’ Mission Services. Last year’s event brought in over 800 people to hear Sr. Helen Prejean speak about the death penalty. This year will feature Alex Kotlowitz -- best known for the best selling There are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing up in the Other America. Small group discussion questions are available from the social action office. This book was also made into a TV movie and copies of the video are available. During this event we will also present the work and creative effort of youth groups, highlighting the multi-cultural perspectives within our community.

Parish social justice course - Communities of Salt and Light being held at Holy Angels, Dayton – other parishes are invited to join with Holy Angels:
