Soul Satisfaction

Luke 9:24-25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?   What are you living your life for? What is the purpose? If it is to satisfy your ego…it is to satisfy your “false self.” As I have said in the past, “ego” stands for: “Edge God Out.” The false self will never be satisfied. It subsists on a program for “happiness” set up in childhood in which every whim and …

Heavenly Banquet

Luke 14:13-14 “When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”  What a better metaphor during this time of Thanksgiving than the heavenly banquet.  Are Jesus’ words not completely opposed to how the world thinks?  Again…Jesus gets to the motivation of our actions.  When we invite people to a party…do we determine who gets invited by what we believe we will “get” from them?  Do we invite …

Valley of Darkness

Psalm 23:4 Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and staff give me courage.     The path of love will lead us through many a dark valley. To love is to respond to persecution with mercy, forgiveness and compassion. Jesus showed us the way. He also showed us that all dark valleys eventually lead to beautiful, bright mountaintops. The dark valleys teach us that we cannot do it on our own. We need someone to lead us…someone like Jesus. The Good …

Step Out of the Boat

Matthew 14:29-31 Jesus said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Is there something in your life now that is causing you to be anxious or fearful? Jesus walks amidst the troubling waves. He is the calmamidst the storm. He invites you …

The Narrow Path

Matthew 7:14 “How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.” Freedom is wonderful…but sometimes it causes us to be shackled in chains. With so many choices it can lead to “egos gone wild.” It’s a veritable smorgasbord of options! But no amount of power, prestige or possessions will be enough to satisfy that yearning for more. What we are all really trying to do is fill a hole in our hearts that was placed there by our Maker…a hole that only God can fill. …

The Most Important Commandment

Mark 12:30-31 “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” This was the answer Jesus gave to the religious leader who asked Him which was the first of all the commandments. Jesus said that “love” is the answer. How can one do this? By not judging others but loving them. By not dividing everything we look upon as either “in” or “out” but in accepting all things as …

May It Be Done to Me…

On May 31, the Church celebrated the Feast of the Visitation. Here’s a reflection on the day: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” Luke 1:46-47 As I work here at Our Lady of the Visitation today…Mary’s statement resounds within me. When I am in the flow of the will of God…my inner most being exults. No matter what struggles are in my life…there seems to be an inner calm…a certain “yes” that pervades my interior. There are really no words to describe it accurately. It …

Salvation Begins Now

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 Jesus said that God is the vine grower and He is the vine. Each one of us is like a branch from that vine. When we are conscious of this divine connection and live in that consciousness we are truly living in the will of God. It is living in a constant flow of love and acceptance. However, when our egos take over and life becomes …

New Life Means Dying

Psalm 102:2: Lord, hear my prayer; let my cry come to you. I cry out. I want all my needs met. This is my childhood program for happiness that refuses to let go. But it must go for me to truly live! My ego will never be satisfied as it will always demand more. As I was sitting in prayer mulling over the psalm verse above, I heard a voice in my heart say, “Yes, I know your needs…but what about the needs of those around you? What if you tried to satisfy their needs …
