Knock, Knock

A couple of days ago, I was shaving and getting ready for work in the bathroom when I heard the gingerly sound of a toddler’s knock on the door.  “Who is it?” I asked. “Heehee, it’s Michael!” came the giggling response. I guess his mother has been teaching him closed door etiquette lately.  Being a child who loves repetition and coming to recognize patterns, Michael goes through the routine of opening and closing the door half a dozen times in the next two minutes.  I proceed to help him test out all the different responses …

Christ at the Center: Home Edition

Pentecost Sunday: May 19, 2013 Gospel: John 20:19-23 OR John 14:15-16, 23B-26 John 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he …

Happy Birthday and Thanks, Mom and Dad!

My parents’ birthdays have come around again.  They are hovering near 80 years old, which is as amazing to me as my oldest son moving that much closer to 30.   As I watch each of these two generations age, and my own bones get creakier, thoughts about the passing on of faith beliefs increasingly occupy my mind. A parishioner made a comment to me last week along the lines that “Sometimes we wait…our entire life, for life to start.”   To the contrary, I learned early that life is to be explored in its possibilities, reflected …

Where 2 or 3 Are Gathered: Home Edition

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time: Mark 13:24-32 Jesus said to his disciples: “In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. “And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. …

Where 2 or 3 Are Gathered: Home Edition

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also …

Figuring Out this “Domestic Church” Stuff

Recently Josh Danis of the Archdiocesan Family Life office in Sidney gave a talk for a Marriage Night in our Pastoral Region entitled “The Domestic Church: Stories and Tips.”   It was entertaining and we thoroughly enjoyed it, but Josh raised some important questions in the minds of my husband and me concerning this topic.  Although I would be about the last one to suggest that we don’t all need more encouragement to live with Christ as the center of our homes, and with our families as a reflection of Trinitarian love … it started me …

Making the Domestic Church Beautiful

As we unpacked piles of boxes in our first place together, my husband and I began with the practical items we knew were necessary for daily life – towels, dishes, lamps.  But amidst the rush to find the practical, I found myself more eager to uncover a tablecloth, placemats, cloth napkins, the salt and pepper shaker and other kitchen table items to set a beautiful table for breakfast.  Why would a nice table matter when the rest of the apartment looked like an obstacle course of cardboard, bubble wrap and wedding cards?  Because beauty is …
