Running from the Cold

For all us athletic enthusiasts out there, winter can be an especially trying time.  Running outside in comfortable spring weather is a challenge that many of us may take up until we learn to love it; until we even learn to long for it.  When the weather turns and the flowers bloom, we cannot drive past a scenic nature trail without having to fight the urge to pop on our shoes and race away.  When it gets like this, we have to make tough choices.  Do we brave snowy wind in our face and sub-zero …

Run As to Arrive

Paul tells us in First Corinthians that we must run so as to win the race, but Paul must not have been talking about the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon!  I ran my first one this year as part of Run For The Call, an initiative that promotes Vocational Awareness for all God’s people.  I knew I would love being part of the initiative, but I had never suspected how much I would love being part of the marathon itself.  Mile after mile, the streets were lined with cheering crowds, encouraging us towards our goal.  We …

Outrun by Mommy

I was recently pushing my way through 5 mile run with my mother.  I am embarrassed to have to admit that right around the 4th mile, I had to ask my 50+ year-old mother to slow down so that her not quite 30 year-old son could keep up with her.  And to make matters worse, I asked her at just the moment that a large group of hikers was going by.  Finishing up the run left my quads burning, my calves stiff, and my lungs anxious for relief.  That’s right, my mother is in incredible …

For the second year in a row, the Vocation Office is pulling together a team of runners to enter the various races of the Flying Pig Marathon and compete as members of the Run for the Call team. This team will be adorned with bright, gold-colored t-shirts with maroon lettering that says boldly, “Run for the Call” on the front and “We all have a vocation, I’m chasing after mine” on the back. As the organizer of this team, I have to admit that I’m a little biased when I say, “What a cool message!” …

Run for the Call

I’m not a runner. Even when I was in the best shape of my life (on two different swim teams at once), I couldn’t run long distances with ease. But I do enjoy it, and I’m always looking for new ways to connect with people who share my passion for the sport as well as new and great causes for which to run. I was excited to find a team of men, women, and children who are helping young men in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati fulfill their vocations to the priesthood by running (or walking) in area …
