Father Alfred J. Powers, a priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for more than 63 years, died Aug. 27. The Springfield native was 88.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk at St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church in Springfield on Aug. 30. Interment followed at nearby Calvary Cemetery.
Father Powers was ordained in December of 1943 by then-Archbishop John McNicholas, following studies at St. Gregory Seminary and Mount St. Marys Seminary of the West.
His first assignment was as assistant pastor at St. James of the Valley Parish, Wyoming. As an assistant pastor, he also served at Holy Family Parish, Cincinnati; St. Albert the Great Parish, Dayton; and St. Ann Parish, Hamilton. He was also a part-time teacher at then-Hamilton Catholic High School.
In 1965, Father Powers was named pastor of St. George Parish, Georgetown, and administrator of St. Mary Parish, Arnheim and St. Elizabeth Parish, Sardinia. Six years later, he was relieved of his duties at St. Mary and St. Elizabeth parishes. In 1972, he became administrator of St. Michael Parish, Mt. Orab, while continuing as pastor of St. George Parish. In 1987, he was named pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Newport. Father Powers retired in 1989 and lived in Springfield.
In his funeral instructions, Father Powers wrote, "I thank God for the privilege of serving His people in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and I ask God to bless you all until we meet in heaven."
He is survived by two nieces, Mary Ellen Bevilacqua and Sandy Hackett.
Sister Mildred Inkrot
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 24 for Sister of Charity Mildred Inkrot, 86, at the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Cincinnati. She died Aug. 21 at Mother Margaret Hall.
A native of Norwood, she graduated from Regina High School in Norwood and earned a bachelors degree in social studies from the College of Mount St. Joseph and a masters in education from Xavier University in 1970. She served the majority of her years as an educator at schools in Ohio: St. Anthony in Cincinnati, 1952-56; Holy Family, 1956-57; St. Mary in Chillicothe, 1957-63; Holy Cross in Cincinnati, 1963-64; and St. Mary in Cincinnati, 1964-65. She returned to Norwood as principal of St. Matthew School in 1965 and served for 21 years.
In 1986, she began a second career as the activities assistant at the Sisters of Charity Mother Margaret Hall nursing facility for three years before she retired in 1989.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Barker of Kingsport, Tenn.
Interment was in the motherhouse cemetery.
