| Msgr. Bernard Schmitz
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 31 for Msgr. Bernard Schmitz, 76, at St. Anthony Church in Morris, Ind. He died March 24 at Ripley Crossing in Milan, Ind.
A native of Cincinnati, he was ordained in 1957. He served as associate pastor at St. Mary Church in North Vernon, Ind., and Annunciation Church in Brazil, Ind., before his appointment to St. Anthony Church, where he served for 37 years. He retired in 2007.
He is survived by his sister, Dolores Schmitz of Cincinnati; and his brother, John of Tucson, Ariz.
Interment was in the church cemetery.
Sister Lucia Mao
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 28 for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Lucia Mao, 79, at the motherhouse chapel in Mount St. Joseph. She died March 18 at Mother Margaret Hall.
A native of Shatung, China, she met the Sisters of Charity in 1947 and entered religious life in 1948 in Wuchang, China.
She came to the United States as a postulant in 1949 following the Communist takeover of China. She began her nursing career as a hospital nurse aide in Mother Margaret Hall (1949-55). She earned her nursing degree in 1959 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton and ministered in the nursing field for 48 years.
Her first assignment was at St. Joseph Infant Home in Cincinnati (1959-62). She also served in Colorado, New Mexico and Michigan. She returned to the motherhouse as assistant clinic nurse in 1988 until her retirement in 1997.
She is survived by her brothers, Paul and Joseph Mao.
Interment was in the convent cemetery.
Sister Mary Felix Loup
A memorial Mass was celebrated April 2 for Josephite Sister Mary Felix Loup, 95, in the chapel at St. Joseph Convent in Baton Rouge, La.
She died March 20 at Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, Kan. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1934 in New Orleans. She was a teacher for 56 years at schools in Louisiana. She also served as principal at St. Joseph Academy in New Orleans and in Cincinnati. She was community archivist for 16 years and retired in 2007 to Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, Kan.
She is survived by four sisters, Rita Major, Irma Martin, Marie Darte and Inez Landry.
Interment was in Mount St. Mary Convent Cemetery.
Sister Mary Rumler
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 25 for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Rumler at the motherhouse chapel in Mount St. Joseph. She died March 16 at Mother Margaret Hall at the age of 83.
A native of Jackson, Mich., she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1945. She earned a bachelor of science in education from the College of Mount St. Joseph and a masters in education and guidance counseling from the University of Dayton.
She taught at elementary schools in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland for 27 years.
In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, she taught at St. Joseph School in Springfield before her appointment as principal of St. Therese, the Little Flower School in Cincinnati.
She also taught language arts at Corpus Christi in Dayton before leaving the formal classroom to intern in school psychology. She then served as school psychologist for the Vandalia Butler School System in Vandalia from 1975-1990.
She retired from teaching in 1990. In 1994, she returned as a school psychologist at St. Helen School in Dayton and in the West Carrollton school district. She retired to the motherhouse in 2005.
She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Yonan, and her brother, James.
Interment was in the convent cemetery in Cincinnati.
Harry Sunberg
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 27 for Harry R. Sunberg, 82, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Cincinnati. He died March 23.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Ann Stockmeier, Margaret J. Sunberg, Michele Gose; his son, Father David Sunberg, pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Cincinnati; and brothers and sisters, Walter, Russell, Catherine Heisler and Eleanor Miller.
Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery.
Sister Virginia Anne Temple
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 31 for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Virginia Anne Temple, 88, at the motherhouse in Mount St. Joseph. She died March 24.
A native of Kenton, Ohio, she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1938.
She earned a masters degree in education from the University of Detroit. She began her ministry as a teacher in 1940, serving for 26 years in the classroom.
In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, she served at St. Teresa School in Springfield (1941-42), St. Joseph in Springfield (1942-43), Corpus Christi in Dayton (1943-52), Annunciation in Cincinnati (1952-53) and St. Albert the Great in Kettering (1959-63). She also taught at schools in Michigan and Colorado.
In 1966, she began her career as a guidance counselor, serving at Marian High School (1977-81) and Purcell Marian High School (1981-88) in Cincinnati and schools in Michigan. She was director of volunteers for many years at Bayley Place and was honored with the JC Penney Golden Rule Award in 1996.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Fout.
Interment was in the motherhouse cemetery.
