Cathedral music director earns top award

CATHEDRAL DEANERY — Anthony DiCello, music director at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains, has been named the 2008 Pastoral Musician of the Year by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). The annual award was presented on July 10 at the NPM convention in Cleveland.

DiCello, who has also served as music director and a faculty member at the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary since 1984, was selected for the award for his contributions to clergy formation, ministry as a parish and cathedral musician, leadership of the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians and his contributions to the work of NPM. As a member, he was responsible for organizing NPM’s standing Committee for Seminary Music Educators. He also presented workshops, directed music for liturgies and directed the choir festival when NPM’s national conventions were held in Cincinnati in 1985, 1995 and 2003. DiCello has been involved in seminary music formation for more than 25 years. Prior to coming to Cincinnati, he served as the cathedral music director at St. Columba Cathedral in the Diocese of Youngtown, and music director for the Diocese of Dallas and Holy Trinity Seminary. He was appointed music director at St. Peter in Chains in 1995.

"I am very honored to be selected by the NPM Board to receive this award," DiCello said. "In honoring me with this award, the seminary, the cathedral and the archdiocese are all honored. I am happy to have received this award in the state of Ohio, the state in which I was born, baptized into the Catholic faith, educated and where I have spend the most significant years of my professional life as a conductor, organist, teacher and cathedral musician in service to the church."

"I can say that the NPM Cincinnati Chapter is delighted that Tony has been named the NPM Musician of the Year," said Tim McManus, NPM Cincinnati chapter director and director of liturgy and music at St. Vivian Parish. "It is an honor he well deserves and we are all grateful for his leadership in pastoral music for the church of Cincinnati."
