Obituaries

Joan Herschede

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 10 for Joan "Joni" Herschede, 67, at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains in Cincinnati. She died Dec. 1 from complications following a massive stroke.

A native of Portsmouth, she was a trustee of the Athenaeum of Ohio.

She is survived by her children, Donald and Deborah Huffman; her sisters, Elizabeth Turner and Therese Colgan; and her brothers, Tom, David, Robert and Leo Roth.

Interment was in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Sister Janet Russell

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 7 for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Janet Russell, 83, at the motherhouse chapel in Delhi Township.

She died Dec. 4 at Mother Margaret Hall.

A native of Portsmouth, Ohio, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph and a master’s in English from Xavier University in Cincinnati.

Sister Janet served the (arch)dioceses of Lansing, Mich.; Detroit, Mich.; Toledo, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; and Chicago in the areas of teaching and counseling in a career spanning 31 years. In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, she served at St. Brigid School in Xenia, Seton High School in Cincinnati, St. Joseph Commercial High School in Dayton, and La Salle High School in Cincinnati. She also worked as a secretary at the motherhouse.

Interment was in the convent cemetery.

Sylvester Smith

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 10 for Sylvester "Bay" Smith, 70, at St. Joseph Church in Cincinnati. He died Dec. 1.

He is survived by his wife, Marcie; his daughter, Denise Taylor; and son Father Reynaldo Taylor, associate pastor at St. Peter Parish in Huber Heights.

Interment was in Baltimore Pike Cemetery in Cincinnati.
