ST. FRANCIS DE SALES DEANERY - During the month of November, students, faculty, families, and friends of Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati participated in the school's annual canned food and clothing drives.

Students from Purcell Marian's Latin class, taught by Lenny Hamm, collected more than half of a food collection campaign in November for the school.

It culminated on Nov. 24, when the school opened its doors to clients who received the donated food, clothing and other household items that they needed. Approximately 175 households were served on the day. Many items were left over and were given to St. Vincent DePaul, Mary Magdelen House, St. George Food Pantry, and the H.O.M.E. Program at Mercy Neighborhood Ministries.

More than half the food collected came from long-time Purcell Marian teacher Lenny Hamm's Latin classes. He challenged each of his students to bring in more than 50 cans and many rose up to the challenge.

The canned food and clothing drive was part of Purcell Marian's observance of "Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month." Students were educated about the issues of hunger and homelessness at the city, national, and global level. They also heard presentations from Andy Freeze, Education Coordinator for the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless.
