St. Xavier, Mother of Mercy celebrate state crowns

Badin welcomes past state champ teams at events

ARCHDIOCESE — For the second time in the past three years, the St. Xavier Bombers football team is the Ohio Division I State Champion, after defeating the Mentor Cardinals by a score of 27-0. With the win, the Bombers completed a perfect 15-0 season, also their second in three years as well as only the second ever by a Catholic school from Ohio. Furthermore, it was the first shutout in the state title games since 1981, and only the second ever.

The St. Xavier Bombers defeated Mentor Cardinals by a score of 27-0 in the state championship contest.

Congressman Steve Chabot, father of St. Xavier marching band co-field marshall Randy Chabot, read a proclamation on the House floor following the St. Xavier state championship. Chabot also honored the Mother of Mercy volleyball team, which won a state title this year.

Mother of Mercy High School celebrated their state championship as the Ohio Division I volleyball’s top squad with a rally and "sea of blue" of the "Bobcat nation" Nov. 12.

Meanwhile, It’s reunion time at Badin High School for a pair of state championship basketball teams.

The girls’ basketball team that won the Division II state championship 10 years ago, during the 1997-98 season, will be honored on Saturday, Dec. 22.

The boys’ basketball team that won the Division III state championship 20 years ago, during the 1987-88 season, will be honored on Saturday, Dec. 29.

"I’m sure the teams are looking forward to getting back together, and we’re looking forward to having them here,’’ said Sally Kocher, Badin athletic director. "Those were two great teams and two unforgettable seasons."

The Badin boys went undefeated, 28-0, and represented the Rams’ first team championship in any sport. The Badin girls finished 25-3 and were the Rams’ first team championship in girls’ athletics.

The players will be recognized on the court before the games, and there will be a post-game reception as well.

Badin’s girls host Roger Bacon on Dec. 22, with the recognition scheduled sometime around 7 p.m. for the 7:30 varsity start. Ditto the boys’ recognition prior to a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip-off against Edgewood.
