St. Ursula Academy soccer team celebrates state championship

ARCHDIOCESE - The St. Ursula Academy soccer team won its third Division I state championship trophy Nov. 10 after defeating the Strongsville Mustangs 2-1 at Crew Stadium in Columbus. The first two state titles were won in 1991 and 1993.

The Bulldogs finished the season at 21-1-2. In his first year as head soccer coach, David Ruehl was more than proud of his winning team. "It has been exciting and really great to be a part of SUA's family, but know that my job wasn't that difficult. The girls are a great group, and there is a great tradition of good soccer players coming through the school. My job was to make sure that they were happy, and happy girls play well. I am a firm believer that if you work hard and the kids are unified, the breaks come your way - and they were breaks we deserved."

One of the team captains, senior Tori Huster, likewise was ecstatic about the championship. "It feels great to have accomplished so much with the girls that we had on the team. We are very proud to say that we could represent our school as we did on Nov. 10.

SUA President Judith A. Wimberg noted that "the support and admiration for this remarkable team has been widespread across campus and beyond. "Winning a state championship is so much fun. It was a great St. Ursula night - great play on the field and great excitement in the stands from our huge cheering section. Being invited to share the honor of giving the soccer players and coaches their championship medals was a real thrill for me. We love our Bulldogs."
