News anchor becomes youth minister
Veteran 700 WLW radio news anchor and singer/songwriter Bill Tonnis is leaving the news business to become youth minister at Our Lady of Visitation Parish in Mack.
"My desire to do something more directly positive in peoples lives and to give back is the overriding factor in my decision. I truly have a passion for positively influencing the lives of young people," said Tonnis, who has been a reporter/anchor at WLW for 24 years. He earned a master of arts degree in Religious Studies from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 2004.
Tonnis hopes to use his music in his youth ministry position "To inspire people to discover who they really are . . . to come to know why theyre here."
Tonnis has been singing and sharing his message at retreats, conferences and concerts in the greater Cincinnati area for the past five years. His final newscast for WLW will be July 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Glenmary Missioners speak at parishes
The Glenmary Home Missioners were invited by the Mission Office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to share information about Glenmary Home Missioners and their ministry in Appalachia, the south and southwest.
Glenmary Father Dan Dorsey will speak at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie and Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Newport during Masses July 14-15. He will also speak at St. Mary Church in Greenville July 28-29.
Glenmary Father Richard Kreimer will speak at St. Mary Church in Urbana and Sacred Heart Church in St. Paris July 14-15.
Elected president of Glenmary in 2003, Father Dorsey has also served as first vice president of the society. A native of St. Louis, Mo., he was ordained in 1978. In addition to serving as the novitiate director for Glenmary, he has ministered in Glenmary missions in Kentucky and Arkansas.
Father Kreimer is retired from assigned home mission ministry. He was ordained in 1979 and served as a Brother before becoming a priest. He ministered in missions in North Carolina and Ohio and was associate director of Glenmarys Mission Office for nine years.

Parish presents Peanut Butter Jam for charity
St. Susanna Parish in Mason will present a special concert, The Peanut Butter Jam, featuring Catholic musicians from around the world including Paul Tate and Deanna Light, Ian Callanan, Tricia Nolan and Aisling Reigh of Ireland and local favorites Bobby Fisher, Brian Bisig and Eileen Bird, Friday, July 6, at 8 p.m. at the parish. There will be a tailgating party beforehand, and all are welcome.
The Peanut Butter Ministry at St. Susanna serves the homeless by preparing lunches and delivering them to St. Francis Seraph in Cincinnati for distribution to the needy.

Xavier University names new associate provost
Kathleen E. Simons is the new associate provost for student life and leadership at Xavier University. She assumed her duties June 25.
Simons was the dean of students at National-Louis University in Chicago and served as the vice president of student affairs and dean of students at Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, Mass. She also served as dean of student affairs at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill., and was director of housing and residence life at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.
She received her doctorate in education administration and foundations from Illinois State University and her masters in communication studies from the University of Kansas.

Professor receives alumni award
White Oak resident and former College of Mount St. Joseph professor of mathematics Mary Ann Hater Haubner received the 2007 Loretta Richards Distinguished Alumni Award at the colleges reunion convocation in June. The award is the highest honor the Mount bestows on its alumni, and its recipient represents achievement in a career or vocation and service to the college.
After graduating from the Mount in 1957 with a degree in mathematics, Haubner went on to receive degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University before joining the Mounts faculty in 1970. From 1970-2003, she taught with the aim to "be the person who helped students become better teachers."
From 1976-79, Haubner served as director of Weekend College, the Mounts signature program. After returning to the classroom, she chaired the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 1985-96 and worked collaboratively to reinstate the math major.
Upon retirement, Haubner received the title of professor emerita from the Mount. Today she volunteers as chair of the Docent Council at the Taft Museum of Art.

Freestore holds Celebriduck auction
As part of the FreestoreFoodbanks Rubber Duck Regatta fund-raiser, the second annual event will feature the auction of more than 30 rubber ducks that have been signed by both local and national celebrities and decorated by students from Xavier University. The "Celebriduck" auction will serve as the official kick-off of the FreestoreFoodbanks largest fund-raising event, the 13th Annual Rubber Duck Regatta on July 26, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee, 1 Levee Way, Suite 2118, Newport, KY 41071.
Participants who signed or decorated ducks include George Clooney, Bronson Arroyo, Jerry Narron, Chad Johnson and Giada de Laurentiis, among others. The ducks were decorated by Xavier Universitys Society of Visual Arts.

Mount hosts information session
The College of Mount St. Joseph will host a graduate information session for people interested in earning a graduate degree on July 10, 6-8 p.m., in the Seton Center. Those who attend will meet with representatives from the Graduate Admission Office, Financial Aid Office and the Mounts graduate programs in education, nursing, organizational leadership, physical therapy and religious studies.
