Giant garage sale to benefit the poor

On July 21, from 9 am to 3 p.m., the Ladies of Charity of St. Gertrude Church in Madeira will present their annual "Treasure Mart" to benefit the poor. This huge garage sale is held each year to benefit needy families in the Cincinnati area.

Literally thousands of items at very reasonable prices will be available, including furniture, appliances, household items, antiques and collectibles, toys, holiday items and decorations, lawn and garden equipment, bicycles, sporting equipment, books, tons of clothing and more.

Now in its 27th year, the Treasure Mart is held on the grounds of St. Gertrude Church, at the corner of Shawnee Run Road and Miami Avenue in Madeira.

What makes the sale unique is the huge diversity of items that are available for purchase, the incredibly low prices, and that all proceeds go directly to outreach programs that help the poor in the Cincinnati area and surrounding counties. Every year, the Ladies of Charity are able to assist hundreds of individuals, families and other charities through the funds raised at the sale. The chairwomen for the event are Marsha Belk and Theresa Dorsey, who have both been involved with the sale for a number of years.

"This is my favorite fundraiser that the Ladies of Charity sponsor. It’s so much fun digging through all the treasures people donate each year," said Belk, whose mother started this fundraiser 27 years ago. Also available for sale is the 2007 Ladies of Charity cookbook Fruit of the Spirit which contains almost 300 recipes from area residents. It retails for $10.

St. Vincent de Paul seeks food from community

Beginning July 21, St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry in the West End will be open from 10 a.m. to12 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month, in addition to its Tuesday and Friday weekday hours, in order to better serve the needs of its clients, particularly the working poor. St. Vincent de Paul’s Lindner Food Pantry, located at 1125 Bank St., is the largest food pantry in the West End. "There are many working poor who need our services but are unable to take advantage of our food pantry during regular hours due to work obligations," said Liz Carter, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. "It is especially important for the pantry to begin extending its hours during these summer months, to help families with children who may typically rely on school lunch programs," she said.

Because food donations often decrease in the summer, opening an additional day will tax depleted supplies, but the organization has committed itself to meeting the need.

Any individual or organization interested in conducting a food drive or making a donation is encouraged to contact Julie Rack at 513-562-8841, extension 225. St. Vincent de Paul’s Lindner Food Pantry serves those residing in the West End, Camp Washington and Fairmount, with zip codes 45214, 45203 and 45225. The pantry provides grocery supplements to more than 500 families each month.

People in these zip codes can receive food from the pantry once a month and should bring photo ID, proof of dependents and proof of address. In addition to the new Saturday hours, the pantry is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m..

For more information on donating or volunteering at the Bank Street Food Pantry, call 513-562-8841.

Migrant workers offered health screenings

Free health screenings and social services for area migrant workers and their families from Berryhill Nursery, Scarff’s Garden Center and Studebaker Wholesale Nurseries will be offered July 18, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Sacred Heart Parish Center, 205 W. Lake Ave., in New Carlisle.

Physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses will conduct the health screenings. Community Mercy Health Partners is teaming with a coalition of Champaign and Clark county organizations to provide the screenings.

These health evaluations are important to the migrant families. In previous years, these screenings have detected medical conditions that would have been overlooked without proper diagnosis.
