Teachers from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati discuss their school during the Jesuit Secondary Education Association triennial national colloquium at Xavier University June 28.

Caring for educational apostolate

Jesuit Secondary Education Association meets at Xavier

ARCHDIOCESE — The Jesuit Secondary Education Association held its triennial national colloquium at Xavier University June 25-29. The gathering brought together nearly 500 educators from Jesuit high schools in the United States, Canada and Ireland. Fifty-two schools from three countries were represented at the colloquium, which proclaimed "Colloquium ’07 — Ignatian Ways of Proceeding" as its weeklong theme.

Mary Muldoon, a teacher from Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Colo., makes notes on the board as other teachers from her school discuss its pros and cons during the colloquium.
Numerous themes were tackled at the colloquium, including:

Experiencing networking along with a sense of Ignatian community;

Addressing the three questions of what schools have done, are doing and might do in support of cura apostolica, caring for the apostolate that is a hallmark of Jesuit education;

Providing concrete ways of proceeding relative to cura apostolica, 2020 Vision and Ignatian identity and integrity;

Experiencing interaction among school teams at the gathering;

And leaving with a sense of appreciation and celebration of the secondary apostolate for education and the association of Jesuit high schools.

We were "so pleased to have these Jesuit educators on our campus," said Jesuit Father Michael Graham, president of Xavier. "Their good work with young people is keeping the Jesuit tradition alive and thriving. As one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities throughout the country, we here at Xavier especially appreciate the work they do and the impact they have."
