McAuley teacher to make presentation at national convention
ST. MARGARET MARY DEANERY - Pamela Vissing, a McAuley High School English teacher, has been selected from among teachers all over the United States to be a presenter at the upcoming NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) conference in New York City from November 15-18. She will share her expertise in the area of Holocaust literature with teachers from around the country on the last day of the conference.
For the past 16 years, Vissing, has taught Holocaust literature. She was a four-year board member of the Hebrew Union College Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education and was among the first teachers in Cincinnati to participate in the Hebrew Union College Holocaust Education for Teachers program. She has personally escorted groups of students to European Holocaust memorials and Dachau. Additionally, she has established a personal relationship with Holocaust survivor and author, Bernard Gotfryd, who wrote Anton the Dove Fancier.
Last year, she helped edit and wrote the preface for The Call of Memory: Learning about the Holocaust through Narrative, a book for teachers who teach Holocaust literature, and she has also been published in Smith, a magazine which celebrates the joy of storytelling.
