Glenmarian receives 2008 Brotherhood Award

Glenmary Brother Dennis Craig will receive the 2008 Annual Brotherhood Witness Award, presented by the Religious Brothers Conference (RBC) in July. Each year the conference presents three awards to deserving Brothers in the categories of witness, Ministry and Presence.

Brother Dennis has been a Glenmary brother for 43 years. Shortly after joining Glenmary in 1965, he became a member of the Glenmary Brothers Building Crew which traveled through the home missions building churches and parish centers as well as repairing people’s homes. Later, as a parish Brother in West Union Brother Dennis helped with religious education, visited parishioners and worked in the parish and in the greater community doing outreach through building projects and evangelization.

During the past nine years, Brother Dennis has focused his ministry on serving Glenmary’s senior members. He also serves as the guest master and house director for the Glenmary residence in Cincinnati.

Carroll junior in National Honor Band

Nick Jobe, a junior at Carroll High School in Riverside, has been selected by Bands of America (BOA) for the national Honor Band that will participate in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade. He was selected from among hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in the honors ensemble.

The BOA Honor Band is a 300-piece national ensemble with winds, percussion and a flag and dance team. Nick, a tuba player, will spend a week in southern California, where he will participate in rehearsals, performances at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and Disneyland, other special activities and an appearance in the New Year’s Day parade. The 2009 band is only the second BOA national marching honor band; the first appeared in the 2005 Rose Parade.

New CISE director is named

Cary B. Powell, vice president and senior relationship manager, Fifth Third Investment Advisors Charitable Management Services Group, has been named director of the Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund (CISE), which helps support students at eight urban schools in Cincinnati.

"She comes to us with a wonderful enthusiasm for the ministry of educating young children in our CISE schools," said Brother Joe Kamis, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. "Her passion to assist the needy along with her vast experience in working with non-profits will give CISE a new energy to expand our reach in the Greater Cincinnati community on behalf of the children we serve."

"The CISE schools provide an excellent Catholic education to 1,700 Cincinnati inner city students in grades K-8," Powell noted. "Of these, 96 percent graduate from high school. I am honored to become part of the CISE organization and look forward to working to further its impact."

Oops — we goofed: In the May 30 edition of The Catholic Telegraph, we incorrectly identified Ray and Joan Loebker of St. Antoninus Parish in a photo as the parents of newly ordained Father Jason Bedel. Father Bedel’s parents, Mary Beth and James Bedel, of Monfort Heights, are shown with him above. We apologize for the error.
