| Deacon Alan Arber
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 6 for Deacon Alan Arber at St. Henry Church in Dayton, where he had served since ordination in 1982. He died May 1 at the age of 74.
Deacon Arber graduated from Chaminade High School in 1952; attended St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati for two years and served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He earned a degree from the University of Dayton in 1962.
He was ordained a permanent deacon by then-Archbishop Joseph Bernardin.
He was retired from the Kettering Foundation, where he had worked as manager of accounting.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.
Deacon Arber is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughters Laura Eiken and Ruth Ann; son Andrew and two grandsons.
Father Herman Kenning
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 12 for Father Herman H. Kenning at St. Clare Convent in Cincinnati. He died May 8.
A native of Cincinnati, he studied at St. Gregory Seminary and Mount St. Marys Seminary in Cincinnati. He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop John T. McNicholas in 1943. In 1953, he earned a masters degree at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Father Kennings first assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Teresa of Avila Parish in Cincinnati. In 1944, he was appointed to the faculty at Mount St. Marys Seminary.
From 1944-52, he was a teacher at then Purcell High School while serving as assistant pastor of St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Bridgetown, Assumption Church in Cincinnati, St. Elizabeth Parish in Norwood and St. Francis de Sales Church in Cincinnati. In 1953, he was appointed assistant chaplain of St. Clare Convent in Hartwell and assistant superintendent of Catholic schools in the archdiocesan Schools Office.
In 1970, Father Kenning was appointed superintendent of Catholic schools, a position he held until 1974, when he became coordinator of the archdiocesan Office for Ministries to the Aging and Retired.
In 1978, he was appointed spiritual director of the Cincinnati Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He retired from the Office for Ministries to the Aging and Retired in 1988, but continued as chaplain for St. Clare Convent.
He served the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor at St. Clare Convent for 55 years. For many years, he was Defender of the Bond for the archdiocesan Tribunal.
Interment was in the St. Clare Convent cemetery.
Sister Eileen Monnin
A Mass of Christian Burial for Precious Blood Sister Eileen Monnin, 83, was held at Salem Heights on May 6. Sister Eileen died April 30 at Maria Joseph Living Care Center in Dayton. She had been a Sister of the Precious Blood for 67 years.
A native of Russia, she entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1940. Sister spent 38 years in education, 20 of those in elementary schools in Indiana, Ohio and Virginia. The remainder of her teaching career was in high schools in Ohio and Missouri where she taught English and drama. While teaching, she also served as organist and choir director in a number of parishes.
In 1980 she began working with the elderly in various capacities: with Senior Services in Cincinnati, as a live-in care giver with an Alzheimers patient, and as founder and administrator of a shared living home for the elderly known as Hubble Court. She served as financial coordinator and volunteer at Sarah Center in Cincinnatis Over-the-Rhine neighborhood from 1996 until her retirement to Salem Heights in Dayton in 2000. Failing health necessitated her move to the Maria Joseph Living Care Center in 2006.
She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Hoying of Sidney; and her brother, Anthony, of Albuquerque, N.M.
Interment was in Salem Heights Cemetery.
