St. Leonard communities celebrate 50 years
St. Leonard Faith Community and the St. Leonard Senior Living Community at 8100 Clyo Road, Centerville, are celebrating 50 years of Franciscan presence in the area.
With the theme of "Embracing Our Past, Celebrating Our Future," members of the St. Leonard family will gather for a square dance and BBQ dinner on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Leonard Auditorium, and a special Mass on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel. Franciscan Father Jeff Scheeler, provincial minister of St. John the Baptist Province, will preside.
After the Mass Franciscan Father Maynard Tetreault will conduct a tour of the chapel.
The St. Leonard presence in the community began when St. Leonard College, a Franciscan seminary for the Cincinnati Province of St. John the Baptist, opened in 1958. After the seminary closed in 1981, Catholics from the area who had been worshipping there voluntarily formed the St. Leonard Faith Community. Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk recognized the group as a "quasi-parochial public association of the Christian faithful," giving it official status in 1989.
In 1983 St. Leonard Center opened its doors with senior housing in 100 rooms in St. Joseph Hall. Cottages, garden homes, a health and rehab center, Chaminade Hall, the Joseph Bernardin Residence and an Alzheimers unit were added after the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor took over in 1985. The Franciscan Services Corporation with the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, as sponsors, assumed ownership in 2001, building additional garden homes. The St. Leonard Senior Living Community is now home to 750 residents.
