| Brother Charles Harl
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 9 for Brother of the Poor of St. Francis Charles Harl, 76, at St. Stephen Church in Cincinnati. He died Nov. 4 at Hospice of Cincinnati.
A native of Evansville, Ind., he served as an elementary teacher and school librarian in the Archdioceses of Cincinnati and Newark, N.J., and in the Diocese of Little Rock, Ark.
Interment was in New St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati.
Sister Helen Jo Wingerberg
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 26 for Sister of St. Joseph of Medaille Helen Jo Wingerberg, 97, at Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, Kan. She died Oct. 24 at the convent.
A native of Cincinnati, she graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1942 and served as an Army nurse in France during World War II for which she received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille in 1949. She taught home nursing at McNicholas High School, then served as a nurse in Louisiana and Ohio from 1951-78. Her ministries included teaching arts and crafts to nursing home residents and serving as a Eucharistic minister.
Interment was in the convent cemetery in Wichita.
Sister Mary Roberto Gruber
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 18 for Sister of Notre Dame Mary Roberto (Ruth) Gruber, 78, at the St. Joseph Heights Convent chapel in Covington, Ky. She died suddenly Oct. 14 at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
She entered the congregation in 1947 and professed her first vows in 1949. Her main ministry was teaching the elementary grades, remaining in the profession for 44 years. She took great satisfaction in preparing the children for the sacraments of Eucharist and reconciliation. Her years In education were followed by secretarial work in several schools, including in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and at St. Joseph Heights.
Interment was in the convent cemetery.
Sister Mildred Marie Bellman
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 13 for Sister of Mercy Mildred Marie Bellman. She died Oct. 27 at the age of 81.
A native of Cincinnati, she was a Sister of Mercy for 57 years, serving most of that time as a cook and laundress at the Provincial House, the Convent of the Divine Will, Mount Carmel Home, the Siena Home in Dayton, St. Cecelia Parish, and Our Lady of Lourdes and McAuley Convents.
She is survived by her sisters, Delores Berling, Celine Fible; and brothers, Joseph, Albert and Robert Bellman.
Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati.
Sister Mary Elise Calmus
A Mass of Christian Burial for Precious Blood Sister Mary Elise Calmus, 73, was held at Salem Heights on Oct. 29. Sister Calmus died Oct. 23 at Salem Heights in Dayton. She had been a Sister of the Precious Blood for 58 years.
A native of Aumsville, Ore., she entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1949. She spent more than 50 years in education serving as a teacher, principal and as supervisor in the Denver Diocesan Education office. Her ministries also took her to Phoenix and Tucson in Ariz. and El Cajon, Calif. She also served in administration at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She was elected to the Congregational leadership of the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1999 and fulfilled the duties of councilor, secretary and for 2 years as treasurer.
She retired to Tucson in 2004 where she did volunteer tutoring and continued as director of the Maria Anna Brunner Fund, a position she held for nine years. Failing health necessitated her return to Salem Heights in Dayton in 2007. Final interment was in Salem Heights Cemetery.
