Moeller launches teen driving program

ST ANDREW DEANERY - Vehicle crashes are the number-one cause of death among teen-agers - and the primary causes of these crashes are speed and lack of use of seat belts. In 2006 alone, 66 percent of teens killed in auto accidents were not wearing seat belts.

Sadly, these statistics became very real to the Moeller High School community this past summer when they lost an upcoming senior, Jordan Bessey, in a tragic car accident. Jordan was speeding and not wearing a seat belt.

To honor his memory and to promote teen driving safety, Moeller recently launched a driving awareness program that they hope will find its way into high schools throughout Ohio. The Moeller Men's Club created key chains intended to remind students to buckle up and slow down.

During the school's recent All Saints Mass, Men's Club President Rob Winterman spoke to the young men about the new program. "We encourage you to buckle up, whether you're going to school, church, practice or games. Do it every time, everywhere," he said. "Do it for yourself, your friends, your family, your classmates. Do it for Jordan. Buckle up for Bessey."

Jordan's father, Walt Bessey, also spoke at the Mass, saying that he hopes no one else makes the same mistake. He said that the pain of losing his son is with him every day but by promoting this program and giving the students a tangible item to remind them of Jordan, he is hopeful that another child won't be lost to a senseless, avoidable death. "Jordan had the opportunity to make the right choice," said Walt Bessey. "He did not. He could have slowed down, and he could have put on a seat belt. He knew he should, but he did not. Please, slow down and buckle up."

During the Mass, Father Mike Leshney blessed the key chains, and students helped distribute them. "Each student, freshman through senior, received a key chain, hopefully reminding them every time they get into a car to 'buckle up for Bessey,' " said Chris Albrecht '77, director of development. "Jordan, in his short time at Moeller, made a big impression on his friends and teammates. If we can save even one life, his impression will be even greater."

The Moeller Men's Club is currently working with the State of Ohio to obtain a grant so they can share the key chains with other area high schools throughout the state. They will also be working with those schools to help promote driving safety. For more information or to learn how your school can obtain "Buckle Up for Bessey" key chains, please contact Chris Albrecht at CAlbrecht@Moeller.org or call him at 513-791-1680, ext. 1310.
