Rollin’ on the river

Serran outing thanks retired priests, welcomes seminarians

ARCHDIOCESE — Cruising up and down the river on a breezy afternoon Sept. 14, Serra Club of Cincinnati was host to retired priests and seminarians for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for an afternoon boat ride aboard the cruising boat Destiny.

Jim Dickman provides some music as Father Don McCarthy sings a tune on the Destiny cruise.
About 50 Serra Club members joined with nearly 50 guests, including seminarians from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, retired priests and retired Auxiliary Bishop Carl K. Moeddell for a three-hour lunch cruise up and down the Ohio River. The scenic view of the river banks with the back drop of the Cincinnati skyline mixed with the blue skies made for a perfect afternoon. The great food, music and company made the day all the more memorable. This was a tremendous opportunity to thank the retired priests for their years of faithful service and to celebrate those in formation who are ready to be the next to lead the local church as priests.

Hostess Alice Willig and Serra Club’s co-chairs for programs, Ed Willig and Pete Bushelmann, vocations director Father Kyle Schnippel, Athenaeum Rector Father Ed Smith, and many Serrans were instrumental in making this floating fest of food, song and sight happen in a fulfilling way.

Serra Club of Cincinnati is about 35 years old and is part of Serra International and the Serra USA Council. Please visit www.serraus.org for more information about Serra and for ideas to promote vocations in your homes and in your parish.
