Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese of Cincinnati have organized a variety of programs to keep environmental concerns primary in the minds of students.

Some include extracurricular activities, such as the Environmental Club (E-Club) at St. Aloysius School in Bridgetown which recently harvested the garden they planted on school grounds. The garden was planted by E-Club members last spring and tended by members over the summer.St. Al’s E-Club has a mission to help the environment and get others to also help while lessening the amount of garbage in landfills. The club’s goals are to recycle, reuse, reduce, repair and compost. The club is guided by second-grade teacher Kathy Holscher and first-grade teacher Peggy Cappel, who was Hamilton County’s 2007 Outstanding Recycling Educator.

Only rainwater collected in a nearby barrel was used to water the garden, and all after-harvest waste was composted on-site. The club will expand the garden next year. They are also making and maintaining four worm bins to compost food scraps from school lunches and maintain recycling bins in all of the school classrooms, offices and cafeteria.
