| Sister Paulita Schuman
A Mass of Christian Burial for Franciscan Sister Paulita Schuman, 81, was celebrated Aug. 29 at the Motherhouse Chapel of the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Ind.
She died Aug. 26 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati and had been a Franciscan Sister for almost 63 years.
Sister Paulita spent 26 years teaching at Sacred Heart School in Fairfield and St. Catherine School in Cincinnati, as well as at schools in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan.
In 1973 she went to Papua, New Guinea, where she spent 25 years teaching and ministering in adult education, literacy, family planning as well as serving as coordinator at Our Mother of Good Shepherd in Mendi.
During her last 11 years in New Guinea she helped form a native Sisters community, now known as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary. She returned to the United States in 1998 and lived at Franciscan Motherhouse in Oldenburg.
Sister Paulita is survived by two brothers, Leroy and Albert Schuman, both of West Harrison, Ind., and two sisters, Lucille Roell of Harrison and Franciscan Sister Mary Inez Schuman of Oldenburg.
